A Journey in Tibet - Opening at Sous Les Etoiles Gallery

"A Journey in Tibet" is a series of photographs from Laurent Zylberman which is being shown at the Sous Les Etoiles Gallery. On Thursday, March 15th, they will be celebrating the opening night from 6 pm to 8 pm, with the artist in attendance. The gallery is located at 560 Broadway Suite 205.

After the riots of 14-16 March, 2008, the photographer Laurent Zylberman and the journalist Eric Meyer were among the first westerners authorized to enter in Tibet, a forbidden region, under traumatized military guard and armed to the teeth.“ We had the desire to place ourselves in the interstices of the economic, social and religious Tibetan society, seize people’s eyes and their relationship with each other revealing a reality they cannot talk or voluntarily express” said Laurent Zylberman.

A Journey in Tibet is a series based on a 15-day mission through “The Top of the World”, between Lhasa, Shigatze, Giangtze and Namso Lake. This photographic journal describes the culture’s vulnerability, allowing us to discover significant internal contradictions of China’s policy for its “autonomous territory.” Each photo solicits strange, unexpected and profound poetry. This awe-inspiring environment in extreme conditions, settled by a very sparse population conveys a feeling of gravity and greatness.

The religious feeling and behavior of friars, laymen and laywomen are discussed, as well as Tibet's spiritual and popular rural culture, which remains largely intact today.

This confrontation nourishes introspection. It forces us to confront the necessary efforts to help both sides of this heterogeneous population, overcome their biases, and to convert the liability
of hatred into an asset of mutual respect.

The series A Journey in Tibet from Laurent Zylberman is part of the book Tibet, The Last Scream written by Eric Meyer, an accredited China correspondent for various francophone medias.

The publication of this diary and photobook, will be released in 2012 in three languages and countries (USA, France, and Spain).

The exhibition A Journey in Tibet at Sous Les Etoiles Gallery is made possible with the support of Rita Castellote Gallery in Madrid, Spain.

2012 Whitney Biennial Opens Today!

Sculpture, painting, installations, and photography—as well as dance, theater, music, and film—will fill the galleries of the Whitney Museum of American Art in the latest edition of the Whitney Biennial. With a roster of artists at all points in their careers the Biennial provides a look at the current state of contemporary art in America. This is the seventy-sixth in the ongoing series of Biennials and Annuals presented by the Whitney since 1932, two years after the Museum was founded.

The 2012 Biennial takes over most of the Whitney from March 1 through May 27, with portions of the exhibition and some programs continuing through June 10. The participating artists were selected by Elisabeth Sussman, Curator/Sondra Gilman Curator of Photography at the Whitney, and Jay Sanders, a freelance curator and writer who has spent the past ten years working both in the gallery world and on independent curatorial projects. Sussman and Sanders co-curated the Biennial’s film program with Thomas Beard and Ed Halter, the co-founders of Light Industry, a venue for film and electronic art in Brooklyn.

The Whitney’s fourth-floor Emily Fisher Landau Galleries will become a dynamic 6,000-square-foot performance space for music, dance, theater, and other events. This is the first Whitney Biennial in which nearly a full floor of the Museum has been given over to a changing season of performances, events, and residencies.

Exit Art's Printed Histories Closing Party

Celebrate the last Saturday of Exit Art’s Printed Histories with Artist Collective Goldmine Shithouse!

Exit Art’s Silkscreen Thrown Down with GMSH features original screens by founding members, David Hochbaum, Travis Lindquist, and Colin Burns. For $5, GMSH will print on anything you bring, from t-shirts to bags to the clothes on your back, so be sure to bring all your goodies to get these amazing prints on your wares!

This event is free and open to the public.

ABOUT GOLDMINE SHITHOUSE
Goldmine Shithouse’s primary focus is on painting, drawing, and collage, but has extended into the realm of video and music/punk rock art noise (Murder Baby). The collective work deals with sometimes violent and difficult themes, filtered through their inexhaustible sense of humor. The contrast of horror and comedy creates a paradox that is relevant, entertaining, and infectious. There are reoccurring themes and symbols throughout the work, including death, bunnies, ladders to nowhere, black hearts and clouds, among many others. The visual elements are derived from a variety of sources, including classical references, the artists' own sketchbooks, as well as a smorgasbord of popular culture.

Celebrating their 9th year as an artist collaborative, the GMSH has exhibited and participated in residencies in New York, NY; Los Angeles, CA; Chicago, IL; Miami, FL; Seattle, WA; Salt Lake City, UT; San Francisco, CA; Berlin, Germany; and Stockholm, Sweden.

Joseph Herscher's amazing Rube Goldberg Machines

Kinetic artist and Brooklynite Joseph Herscher has been getting a lot of attention recently for his incredible Rube Goldberg Machines. Accomplishing the simplest tasks in the most complicated (and yet simultaneously elegant) way is definitely worthy of performance art status. With a past appearance at the 2011 Venice Biennale under his belt, I look forward to seeing what will come next.

Photography in Motion from César Mansilla Sialer

Buenos Aires based, Peruvian born, photographer César Mansilla Sialer has one of the best photography videos I have seen in a while - but maybe thats because it isn't really a video. Rather than attempting a switch to narrative video to get his work out to the public - he has taken the art of slideshow above and beyond with his Photography Reel. The illusion of time and movement is still achieved, while highlighting his ability to capture a still image (rather than showing some new technique). Don't believe me that it isn't just a slideshow... see for yourself!

Exit Art - After 30 Years, Exits with a Bang!

For 30 years, Exit Art has supported and fostered a vibrant, interdisciplinary artistic community in New York, presenting hundreds of innovative exhibitions and the works of thousands of emerging and established artists. Now, with plans to close at the end of its 30th anniversary season, Exit Art is looking back on its own history; celebrating the pioneering work of its co-founders, Papo Colo and Jeanette Ingberman; and asking its longtime supporters for help in sending us out with a bang.

This Gala and Auction is being held to raise funds for Exit Art's "Legacy Project": a 30-year retrospective exhibition, the publication of a major book on the history of Exit Art, and a properly-funded transfer of the organization's complete archives to NYU Fales Library Downtown Collection. At Fales, scholars will be able to study Exit Art, its groundbreaking programs, and the thousands of artists who have shown here since 1982. It is vital that Exit Art continues to be recognized for its contributions to alternative art and culture in New York.

White Box hosts Mtree Charity Auction

White Box NYC is hosting a show of work resulting from the Mtree "Brush with Hope" project in Benin, with the opening on Friday, November 4th from 6pm-8pm. The following day, Saturday, November 5th, there will be a silent auction starting at 7pm which will go to benefit the community in Benin.

This special exhibit and auction stems from the project "Brush with Hope," a summer program hosted by Mtree where artists and designers from New York City and Paris gather in Africa to offer art classes to African children. The first set of classes took place in Benin, West Africa and 300 Beninese children participated from July 29, 2011 to August 12, 2011. To children who barely had one meal a day, art instruction was a new experience. The instructors wished to instill hope in these children. The inner thoughts and feelings of the children were expressed through 2,800 paintings and drawings, which were brought to New York City. A selection of approximately 300 works will be exhibited for the event and all auction proceeds will go to fund a water pump in Benin.

The exhibition will consist of paintings and drawings on canvas or on paper, in color or monochrome. The artwork will be divided into six different categories: self-portraits, portraits of family, portraits of friends, collaborative works, works inspired by music, and "hope".

Mtree
Mtree is an international non-profit charity organization aiming to change the developing and developed countries into a better place ("change for all") by promoting networking and supporting young adults who are pursuing visions around the world.

While serving as an officer in the Republic of Korea Army for four years, Yohan Choi (Founder of Mtree) spent two years near the North Korean border and witnessed the hardships that North Koreans were facing. Through this experience, he became interested in developing countries. Since his discharge in 2009, he has traveled around the globe networking with young professionals in the US and in Europe and has fostered an interest in economic independence and development through running the Global Entrepreneurship Training (GET) program in Kenya and Ghana sponsored by UNESCO.

Automaton at Hasted Kraeutler

Incredible NY photography gallery HASTED KRAEUTLER is offering a limited number of pre-release copies of Paolo Ventura's new book, The Automaton ($60) which isn't supposed to hit the shelves until2012. HASTED KRAEUTLER will have 200 advance publication copies during Paolo Ventura's exhibition The Automaton of Venice, September 8 - October 15, 2011.

The Automaton centers around an elderly, Jewish watchmaker living in the ghetto of Venice in 1943, one of the darkest periods of the occupation of the Nazis and the rule of the fascist regime in Italy. The city where the watchmaker has lived his entire life, now desolate and fearful, is the stage where this story unfolds. The photograph is actually the final product in a chain of creative processes, from initially drawing the scene in watercolor to constructing an elaborate miniature set with figurines to taking the final photograph. Paolo Ventura has been selected for the Italian national pavilion of the prestigious Venice Biennale 2011. Paolo Ventura lives and works in Anghiari, the small village in northern Italy where he grew up. He has created three bodies of work, War Souvenir (2005) and Winter Stories (2007-2009), both of which were published in books, exhibited widely and critically acclaimed, and mostly recently, Venice (2010).

See below for a selection of works from all three collections.

Rad Hourani - The Future of Cool

Rad Hourani's Unisex Collection for Fall 2011 has an amazing structural and architectural edge to it. The six amazing and transformable garmets can be combined and contorted to make 22 fabulous and futuristic looks (ALL 22 shown here - after the jump). The garment construction gives off a downy feel that makes you want to snuggle in these simultaneously sharp edged yet pillowy soft looks reminiscient of Japanese geishas. Although these modern day obis are a bit more minimalistic - with a multitude of uses.

Paola Hernandez - Fall 2011

Paola Hernandez presented her Fall 11 collection, titled “A Look Within,” at the W New York on Sunday. There is nothing I love more than art and fashion with a few cocktails mixed in. The presentation consisted of a mix between models and actual artists from the New York Academy of Art in looks ranging from layered corset dresses to long wool layered coats.

The authenticity of the artists highlighted the concept behind the collection which was based on the idea of balance. The pieces were primarily simple colors, black and grey; paired with a silver lining, suggesting light and revealing the power for creation within. While sipping on Perrier and Whiskey Sours provided by Auchentoshan (admittedly more Auchentoshan than Perrier), we were able to actually observe the artists creating, whether it was painting, sculpting, drawing, or writing.
