Recent CFDA Incubatee NUMBER:Lab showed their Fall 2012 collection recently at Milk Studios. The collection, with their perennial combination of luxury and high-tech fabrics hits the nail perfectly on the head. The perfect look for the sophisticated but rugged urban male, Luis Fernandez manages to bring in the 3Cs of color, cut, and clarity of vision in a way that its no suprise to have a diamond-esque sculpture accenting the runway (yes, I realize it is supposed to be a glacier). This collection is 100% what ready-to-wear is all about, since I am ready to wear any and all of these outfits straight from the runway, and I know I am not alone! I would say I can't wait to see what they'll do next, but I am too busy re-watching this presentation and picking out my fall wardrobe...

Amali Launches Sustainable Wine Dinner Series

On January 31st, Amali, a Mediterranean restaurant dedicated to supporting responsible farming, viniculture and green design, will begin a series of monthly wine dinners showcasing organic, biodynamic, vin natural and sustainable wine paired with food sourced from local farms. Amali is partnering with the Organic Wine Journal to promote awareness of the importance of sustainable winemaking practices.

At the inaugural dinner "Assyrtiko No Longer: The New (or Rather Old) Red Wines of Greece", Amali, in partnership with Frederick Wildman and Sons Imports, will be the first restaurant in the United States to debut four wineries and more importantly, four new (or rather ancient) varietals never before imported to the United States outside of private collections.

The winemakers will be on hand with a limited amount of barrel samples or older vintages as well as the listed vintages below to showcase each varietal's multifaceted expressions.
Chef Gilroy's four course menu will highlight lamb and fowl from local farms, including Elysian Fields Farm in Pennsylvania.

ABOUT GOLDMINE SHITHOUSE
Goldmine Shithouse’s primary focus is on painting, drawing, and collage, but has extended into the realm of video and music/punk rock art noise (Murder Baby). The collective work deals with sometimes violent and difficult themes, filtered through their inexhaustible sense of humor. The contrast of horror and comedy creates a paradox that is relevant, entertaining, and infectious. There are reoccurring themes and symbols throughout the work, including death, bunnies, ladders to nowhere, black hearts and clouds, among many others. The visual elements are derived from a variety of sources, including classical references, the artists' own sketchbooks, as well as a smorgasbord of popular culture.

For 30 years, Exit Art has supported and fostered a vibrant, interdisciplinary artistic community in New York, presenting hundreds of innovative exhibitions and the works of thousands of emerging and established artists. Now, with plans to close at the end of its 30th anniversary season, Exit Art is looking back on its own history; celebrating the pioneering work of its co-founders, Papo Colo and Jeanette Ingberman; and asking its longtime supporters for help in sending us out with a bang.

This Gala and Auction is being held to raise funds for Exit Art's "Legacy Project": a 30-year retrospective exhibition, the publication of a major book on the history of Exit Art, and a properly-funded transfer of the organization's complete archives to NYU Fales Library Downtown Collection. At Fales, scholars will be able to study Exit Art, its groundbreaking programs, and the thousands of artists who have shown here since 1982. It is vital that Exit Art continues to be recognized for its contributions to alternative art and culture in New York.

Just having gotten back from a week in Punta del Este and I already wish I could go back - especially with the Oasis Collections opening a seasonal Clubhouse in Punta this year! Their BA hangout has been such a success that they are expanding to include a second location from December 28th through January 8th. If you are headed to the beach this is definitely one hot spot not to miss in South America's coolest beach resort.

After a thrilling match against La Aguada, La Dolfina took home the HSBC Cup and a spot in the finals to be held on December 9th. Their opponent will be decided by tomorrow's match of Ellerstina versus Estancia Grande. Following the match guests mingled at the many private viewing booths - though the best was definitely HSBC's mix of high finance, high fashion, and four victorious polo players mingling among (seemingly) endless champagne and a multi-course dinner. As the party at HSBC winded down it was time to head to the Chandon area where all the spectators gathered like moths to a flame for a champagne fueled dance party along the primary esplanade of the Campo Argentino del Polo.

White Box hosts Mtree Charity Auction

White Box NYC is hosting a show of work resulting from the Mtree "Brush with Hope" project in Benin, with the opening on Friday, November 4th from 6pm-8pm. The following day, Saturday, November 5th, there will be a silent auction starting at 7pm which will go to benefit the community in Benin.

This special exhibit and auction stems from the project "Brush with Hope," a summer program hosted by Mtree where artists and designers from New York City and Paris gather in Africa to offer art classes to African children. The first set of classes took place in Benin, West Africa and 300 Beninese children participated from July 29, 2011 to August 12, 2011. To children who barely had one meal a day, art instruction was a new experience. The instructors wished to instill hope in these children. The inner thoughts and feelings of the children were expressed through 2,800 paintings and drawings, which were brought to New York City. A selection of approximately 300 works will be exhibited for the event and all auction proceeds will go to fund a water pump in Benin.

The exhibition will consist of paintings and drawings on canvas or on paper, in color or monochrome. The artwork will be divided into six different categories: self-portraits, portraits of family, portraits of friends, collaborative works, works inspired by music, and "hope".

Mtree
Mtree is an international non-profit charity organization aiming to change the developing and developed countries into a better place ("change for all") by promoting networking and supporting young adults who are pursuing visions around the world.

While serving as an officer in the Republic of Korea Army for four years, Yohan Choi (Founder of Mtree) spent two years near the North Korean border and witnessed the hardships that North Koreans were facing. Through this experience, he became interested in developing countries. Since his discharge in 2009, he has traveled around the globe networking with young professionals in the US and in Europe and has fostered an interest in economic independence and development through running the Global Entrepreneurship Training (GET) program in Kenya and Ghana sponsored by UNESCO.

They will be showing a selection paintings by Charles Andersen created over the last decade and curated by Chris Byrne. The project is spearheaded by Anne-Brigitte Sirois who also heads up ART STATE, an arts focused real estate advisory firm. With her experience in developing art projects, this is definitely an opening not to miss.

Personal Effects is a sprawling exhibition presenting the idiosyncratic, street art based collection of photographer Eric Wolfe, and featuring works by more than 65 international artists including SWOON, Banksy, Shepard Fairey, Faile, Bast, Kara Walker, Brian Eno, Claes Oldenburg and Anna Gaskell.

In 2004, Wolfe purchased a wheatpaste graphic mounted on wood from a high school student known as Gaia. In the following years, his collection grew rapidly, with works being purchased from galleries, at auction, or directly from the artists, sometimes using trade or barter. Many of the artists Wolfe became interested in were in the early stages of their gallery careers or were still relatively unknown outside of a small community.

Wolfe's collecting impulses connect with his ongoing need to collect and preserve bits of ephemera from his own life as well as the detritus of strangers. Aligned with the burgeoning market for street art, Wolfe's modus operandi has led to the creation of a collection that eventually no longer fit under one roof. As the years passed, Wolfe's taste and purchases have evolved along with changes in his own life - a reflection of the deeply personal nature of this collection. While street art remains at its heart, other forms of contemporary art are well represented and thematic groupings crossing all genres and eras have developed, such as works inclusive of the F-word, rabbit imagery and a significant collection of Peter Norton Christmas gifts. A variety of mediums are also represented, including stencil, collage, painting, papercut, spray paint, screen printing and sculpture.

From Bushwick to Bristol and beyond, Personal Effects brings together Wolfe's collection of over 100 pieces of artwork on simultaneous display for the first time.

"Like a mad scientist or surgeon, I have constructed disjointed protruding bones (re-imagining the internal skeleton of a piece of furniture) and have obsessively attempted to repair used kitchen towels by stitching every piece back together again. Not content with trying to repair such mundane every day objects, I've also attempted to create 'scabs' for old wooden floors, plugging up the gouges that decades of use have wrought."

Can an inanimate object be "healed?" '10 Aferro Studio Resident Caroline Mak's attempted mimicry of this organic, biological process led to a new series of sculptural objects from found and discarded materials from everyday life, as well as from the vast resources of eBay where barely functioning goods can still have a second life.The objects that have been "healed" or repaired range from broken ladders and chairs, to punctured inner tubes and tangerines.

'09 Studio Resident Barbara Wallace's spare, confrontational installation in the Liminal Space consists of two large scale sculptures representing the full-sized figures of a man and a woman, and a series of sculpted portrait heads based on the individuals from the artist's inner circle. The works are created in the faux-bronze technique that Wallace has mastered

Wallace is interested in the meaning of creating a portrait: the physical likeness of a person vs. their inner essence. The process that the artist uses has more to do with her experience and memories of the person involved than of the actual features of the person she portrays. Wallace is inspired by the words of the great 19th century photographer Julia Margaret Cameron: ". . . my whole soul has endeavored to do its duty towards them in recording faithfully the greatness of the inner man as well as the features of the outer man."

Gallery Aferro and GlassRoots are proud to unveil an exhibition that includes works created by young artists, teaching artists and artist friends of GlassRoots. The exhibition takes inspiration from the three states of matter. Through a highly collaborative process, the works on exhibit represent the artists' attempt to interpret and reflect the unique qualities of glass and its ability to be transformed into expressions of themselves. Made of glass, all works were manipulated by fire and heat over open flames, in kilns to temperatures exceeding 2000 degrees.

Some pieces on exhibit were created by students who only six weeks prior had no experience or knowledge of glass making. Others were created by highly trained and practiced professionals. All, however, reflect the life experiences, personal beliefs, influences and creativity of their creators.

Maybe it is just me... but the newest video from Burberry seems a bit... ehem... suggestive. Though the simplicity of the shots by Mario Testino are incredible and striking, and Rosie Huntington-Whiteley is beautiful as always, I am a bit suprised at how sexually provocative the video feels. Between the intimate tone of the video (totally appropriate for a perfume that is supposed to make you feel sexy) and the sleek product packaging (again elegant and appropriate, though perhaps overly phallic) there seems to be something more that the video alludes to. Apparently if you get the new Body from Burberry (launched today) you will have everybody you need for a good time...

Nudes by Sophie Delaporte - Opening Sept. 22 at Sous Les Etoiles

Inspired by high fashion (and her career as a British fashion photographer), Sophie Delaporte claims that with her new series Nudes she has been able to overcome the limitations offered by fashion photography. Her photography has alway brought about a spirit of vivacity and intuition which is now translated with a new energy into graphic simplicity. Accessories such as paper, fabric, and furniture, embellish the pose of the model to create a dramatic and playful elasticity of movement. With her own colors, her way of staging, and the joy of her imagery, Delaporte lets these fashion butterflies take flight - sans clothing.

Incredible NY photography gallery HASTED KRAEUTLER is offering a limited number of pre-release copies of Paolo Ventura's new book, The Automaton ($60) which isn't supposed to hit the shelves until2012. HASTED KRAEUTLER will have 200 advance publication copies during Paolo Ventura's exhibition The Automaton of Venice, September 8 - October 15, 2011.

The Automaton centers around an elderly, Jewish watchmaker living in the ghetto of Venice in 1943, one of the darkest periods of the occupation of the Nazis and the rule of the fascist regime in Italy. The city where the watchmaker has lived his entire life, now desolate and fearful, is the stage where this story unfolds. The photograph is actually the final product in a chain of creative processes, from initially drawing the scene in watercolor to constructing an elaborate miniature set with figurines to taking the final photograph. Paolo Ventura has been selected for the Italian national pavilion of the prestigious Venice Biennale 2011. Paolo Ventura lives and works in Anghiari, the small village in northern Italy where he grew up. He has created three bodies of work, War Souvenir (2005) and Winter Stories (2007-2009), both of which were published in books, exhibited widely and critically acclaimed, and mostly recently, Venice (2010).

Lanvin looks like it is going to have a situation for fall... thanks to this Steven Meisel video that was apparently choreographed by Pauly D. The girls were slightly ironically (and forgivably) bad but the boys were just tragic. I didn't realize that Alber Elbaz, Karen Elson, and Raquel Zimmerman were such big fans of the American Riviera that is the Jersey Shore...

Though the dancing is laughable at best, the clothes still manage to be gorgeous - proving you don't need rhythm to rock out in these stellar designs. And when it comes to Lanvin, you are right Alber - I do want you, or at least I want your clothes.

KahriAnne Kerr Spring 2012 - Two Collections with One BOLD Look for Spring

KahriAnne Kerr takes her inspiration from the iconic hard-rocking sister act of Ann and Nancy Wilson from the 70s and 80s girl band, Heart. Their hit song "Barracuda" plays a recurring role in both the Kahri and KA lines for S/S 2012.

The latest collections include maxi dresses, silk & satin ruffled tops, metallic-coated linen skirts, cropped jackets and bustier tops. Chevron stripes and strong magenta tones reflect an LA "rocker" aesthetic that is continuing to gain steam with downtown New Yorkers. Sheer flowing long sleeves and peasant-style dresses plus eyelet fabric are an updated homage to the bohemian-chic look of classic female musicians from the 70s (think Stevie Nicks with a sartorial facelift).

The "Barracuda" theme goes a bit too literal when it is reflected in fish-scale patterns used throughout the collection. Fun screen-print tees and tote bags with odes to Heart's lyrics pull everything back in the direction of fun, while still holding to the literal aspects of the inspiration.

These LA looks aren't just available on the west coast, KahriAnne Kerr's designs are currently available nationwide and in New York City at Kit 228.

Launched in 1999, the New York International Latino Film Festival (NYILFF) is the premier Urban Latino film event in the USA, and this year Maria My Love took home the award for best domestic feature film. The award was accepted by producer Tiana Matthews. Inspired by a true story, Maria My Love is about a young woman named Ana (Judy Marte) struggling to deal with her mother's death and her father's mistakes. In an effort to feel better, she reconnects with her half-sister Grace, (Lauren Fales) and, inspired by a new boyfriend (Brian Rieger), sets out on a quest to find someone to help. Though excited and hopeful when she meets a hoarding woman named Maria (Karen Black), she encounters a situation more emotionally and morally complicated than she had expected to find. Maria Vazquez - Spring 2011

The final show of fashion week in Buenos Aires and the runway has sprouted giant multicolored mushrooms. The opening look did not disappoint after the mushroom laden runway and acid trip video. Bright colors pop on top of crisp white backgrounds and a caged bird print on black adds to the trippy vibe with its bright colors and swirling paisley accents. The show continues with some great color blocking in lemon and tangerine silks, paired with turquoise green shoes.

The Maria Vazquez girl is definitely living in a technicolor world this spring - even the accessories, like a multicolored button clutch, help bring a pop of color to an otherwise all too normal little black dress. Flowers and stripes make an extremely powerful statement whether paired or standing on their own. These patterns become 3D and really jump out to grab the viewer as they are incorporated into structural elements of the garments (and I thought that they were speaking loudly before - now they are standing up and shouting!) The girl who wears these clothes better have a lot of personality - otherwise the clothes will end up wearing her. Seriously, they can truly come alive - or maybe the show was just one big acid trip. Either way you should watch out for these clothes - you don't want to miss them, and you will definitely see them coming. Hopefully to a boutique near you...

Hermanos Estebecorena - Spring 2011

The models had to navigate a runway full of obstacles, and in their underwear no less! Well at least the first two did... The obstacles ended up melding together to display the company logo when seen head on. The clothes were classic, refined, and at times playful. The look incorporated fun prints like flowers and lighthouses (reminiscent of little boys' bedding) with everyday staples and some sleek jackets. These pieces could walk right off the runway and into the closet of any dapper dude from New York, London, Tokyo, or Milan. The HE-man has plenty of fashion sense with a bit of whimsy thrown in.

There also might have been a bit of magic backstage - with the whole show comprised seemingly of three models (though it turns out to be four - two sets of twins, one being admittedly more identical than the other...) Apparently in Argentina only the boys know how to do quickchanges, and these guys are experts.

The staple pieces presented in the collection are well thought out and excellently tailored, giving the right mix of polish and enjoyment. The tailored shorts, hemmed to just above the knee, have a great sense of classic modernity to them. If there were to be any complaint (not that I have one) it would be a question of color. The clothes were impeccable but lacked the bursts of color one so longs for after a cold grey winter.

As the show came to a close there were a few surprises. The chest mounted camera was certainly one of them, and this techno-modern edge came from nowhere - as did the next model (in his only sighting of the show) finally giving us some color in a purple bathing suit - worn with a thick coat of chest hair. Overall an excellent collection of spring staples - which according to the runway obstacles you can now buy online!

Varanasi - Spring 2011

The heavy handed intro video was entirely unnecessary - like being forced to sit through all of the credits before getting to watch the movie. The African influence on the collection would have been abundantly clear without the laborious video (OR the African singing, OR the sculptures on the runway - though both of these I enjoyed). Lightweight white linen pieces floated down the runway with patchwork and applique details that ride the line between tribal and holly-hobby but somehow manage to come across mostly fashionable. As the music amped up and the group started singing we were delighted with a celebration of colors in interesting geometrics - both on the clothes and the models themselves (the models had painted hands and arms). All of the colors seem to have a root in nature which allows them to be mixed (at times in abundance) interestingly and elegantly. The clothes are definitely for a more modern and artsy woman who appreciates the hand touched feel of less processed fabrics and a spice of something different. Bright bold prints brought back the tribal feel in a modern and interesting way. One of the recurring visuals was a (nearly giraffe) pattern that seemed to emulate the cracks in dry mud - both structurally and in prints. I still can't decide whether the plastic Massai neckbands and giant gold starfruit earrings were over the top or a genius new jewelry trend to watch.

The wood, metal, and leather sculpture were just as interesting as the clothes and never waivered in their taste level or interest. They definitely added rather than detracting (unlike the video).

Cora Groppo - Spring 2011

One of the strangest openings I have ever seen, three models walked down the second row of seats on both sides of the runway before the first model stepped foot on the runway. This was a precursor of the models doing double duty - walking the runway then completing another lap up and down the aisles. The garments were decidedly dark with black, navy, and midnight blue as a palette. However, their light and ethereal nature told you that they were decidedly for spring. The clothes had an interesting precariousness to the way they were layered - as if made from scraps of other luxurious garments. Color came into the collection with dusty mauve, platinum, and purple. There is a natural architectural quality, as if the pieces grew organically or were put together by waves or winds rather than men in hard hats. The great mix of textures range from light weight knits, to silks and jerseys, and even a shockingly yet seasonably light leather. The layered looks are great for a day on the town - and will carry you from spring through fall. Meanwhile, the sculptural dresses are perfect for your next cocktail event and can hold their own against the best that modern art (or modern dance, given their ethereal nature) has to offer.

Grupo 134 - Spring 2011

The hipster vibe meets an old English (as in England... not the malt liquor) feel - including an older bearded man who is either famous or they were really trying to push the bum aesthetic further than anyone in Williamsburg is willing to. The clothes were in a muted palette of tan, cream, white, grey, and black. The stylistic choice of a bowler hat is not my favorite; especially as it has been repeated on every single model. There is a good use of layering, even if the clothes look worn out, although the guys look bored and dirty more than anything. The ladies come out in a similar aesthetic but here it seems to have some direction. Light weight fabrics flounce down the runway and the girls look ready to hit the street in the summer heat. My personal favorite look is a cream silk jumper with short-shorts in a dark polka dot. And unlike their gentlemen counterparts, we are seeing a bit of color on the ladies, with coral colored tops and accents.

Another older man comes out and walks the runway for good measure (this one is shaven and more rocker-chic) then the fashion is amped up! The mens and women's clothes are both sleeker and, at least for the boys, chicer. It seems that now we have gone from day to night- where the proportion of black in the ensembles makes a bit more sense, even if it is supposed to be spring. I am sure that it doesn't hurt that it seems like they have saved their better looking (and better walking) models for this section of the show - since apparently quickchanges weren't an option. the dark black outfits on the ladies are brightened up with white stripes to add a nautical yet dramatic feel to them.

The video art piece projected throughout the show was very well thought out and well tied into the show; that is, until the unfortunate Greenpeace ad at the end. Stupidly and unnecessarily politicizing, it almost makes me dislike the whole collection even though there were a few worthwhile garments.

Vicki Otero - Spring 2011

The opening look combined with the harp music gave a very Victorian / Alice in Wonderland doll feel, which quickly jumped back and forth with a sort of retro-modern style. Dark color palette of blacks and greys with heavier looking fabric than you might expect from a Spring/Summer collection was combined with platform with platform shoes so hideous you would almost think they are orthopedic...

The first white garments are (not) surprisingly unfresh - with a bib detail that is at one moment baby doll and the next sailor boy. Finally we get some plausible spring dresses, but even when they are flouncy they feel too heavy in grey and dark blue hues. The color suddenly shifts to include a bright lipstick red with black - seemingly coming out of nowhere and then disappearing back into nothing - which I think is where it belongs. A white cowl-back top paired with a black skirt followed by a white overcoat and great scarf tied in a bow (in black of course) try to salvage the collection at the end. The show finishes as we see a tango singer come out to stand off the last model like a matador with a bull.

Other than the last two looks the white Alice in Wonderland dress on the harpist and the all white linen suit on the singer my be the best outfits in the show. I can only hope that they were also made by Vicki Otero. In the end, the only thing heavier than the fabrics pleated and folded upon the models is their makeup - a fuchsia eye with accented heavy eyebrows definitely read spring (if you are Frida Kahlo).

Evangelina Bomparola - Spring 2011

The show opened strong with an elegantly tailored tangerine jumpsuit, followed by multi-colored graphic and geometric pieces in an ivory, camel, and tangerine palette. She is clearly drawing inspiration from the late 70s and early 80s. At times this was in a very modern way like her shift dresses, which are simultaneously architectural and structureless - in the best possible way. While at others very literal, as with the odd pair of bellbottoms included in the collection. The color palette expands to include exuberant accents of magenta and canary as well.

Her high waisted short-shorts will definitely give girls a reason to hit the elliptical before spring gets here. A series of canary dresses bring some pop back into the collection while highlighting the aforementioned architecturality of the collection as they float down the runway. Stunning gold zipper details are highlighted bu the black trim surrounding them - really making this detail stand out on these otherwise bright and weightless garments. The Mondrian inspired clothes are perfect for a cocktail or a gala event, whether you are supporting the MALBA or the MOMA. Truly a modern sensibility for dressing women, Evangelina has managed to pull some of the best elements from the past and drag them into the present.

Unfortunately, as a series of gorgeous ivory dresses with magenta accents came out the musicians either ran out of things to play or encountered technical difficulties, distracting from the show - always something to think about when you choose to use live musicians in a show. The cacophony of noise started up again- now sounding more like a siren than music - just as the last model stepped off the runway. Such a tragic way to end an otherwise splendid show...

Buenos Aires Fashion Week

The stage was set for my first South American fashion show. Other than the setup for a live band on the runway and ads playing from jumbotrons before the show - this seemed just like any other runway event. It is quite remarkable how fashion people all seem to look the same, no matter where you are in the world. And of course, there was the requisite amount of pushing, herding, and standing in line. The main salon (much larger in size than the two runway salons combined) feels more like one of the trade shows La Rural is famous for hosting, than anything I have seen in New York. This led to the event feeling somewhat smaller market, not dissimilar to the up and coming Philly Fashion Week (which I was ever so lucky to model at once upon a time...) Perhaps a trip to Brasil is in order to see if this is just how things are done in South America. Also Interesting is how centralized everything is - with all of the PR seemingly handled by through the fashionweek organization rather than individual PR firms, and without upstart rival shows happening all around town.

Focusing on Comfort in the City, the BMW Guggenheim Lab has launched its first of nine projects today on the border zone between the East Village and the LES. This community forum space will travel to Europe and Asia before returning to the Guggenheim Museum where the information gathered will be presented. Over the Lab’s six-year migration, there will be three distinct mobile structures and thematic cycles. Each structure will be designed by a different architect, and each will travel to three cities around the globe. The structure is open Wednesday through Sunday from 1-9 pm (with extended hours of 10am - 10pm on weekends). Looks like the East Side has found its answer to the highline... but only until October 16th!

SSMAC 2nd Annual Ketucky Derby Champagne Brunch

Hats and Horsies, what better way to spend a Saturday morning. The Junior Committee of the Soldiers', Sailors', Marines', Coast Guard, and Airemen's Club, headed by Rachel Kirwin and John Vricella, couldn't agree more. From a bottomless champagne brunch at Harry's, 1 Hanover Square, to the races watched live at the 283 Lexington Ave Clubhouse, this was an excellent day. Friends gathered in their preppy finest, with hats donned by the gentlemen as well as the ladies. After a three course brunch and plenty of champagne a huge crowd migrated uptown and gathered 'round to root on their favorite horses. After two years of successful brunches, we hope that this is a tradition that will continue for a while longer.

Love Brigade “Defends Their Neighborhood”

In a bid to raise awareness of all locally-owned businesses, Brooklyn-based fashion label Love Brigade is launching its “Defend Your Neighborhood” campaign next week, to include campaigns for each of the three surrounding neighborhoods, “Defend Williamsburg”, “Defend Greenpoint”, and “Defend Bushwick”. Specific custom designs have been issued, with each neighborhood getting its own iconic battle ship graphic to remind us all to put our money where our house is and “Support Our Local Everything”.

Paola Hernandez - Fall 2011

Paola Hernandez presented her Fall 11 collection, titled “A Look Within,” at the W New York on Sunday. There is nothing I love more than art and fashion with a few cocktails mixed in. The presentation consisted of a mix between models and actual artists from the New York Academy of Art in looks ranging from layered corset dresses to long wool layered coats.

The authenticity of the artists highlighted the concept behind the collection which was based on the idea of balance. The pieces were primarily simple colors, black and grey; paired with a silver lining, suggesting light and revealing the power for creation within. While sipping on Perrier and Whiskey Sours provided by Auchentoshan (admittedly more Auchentoshan than Perrier), we were able to actually observe the artists creating, whether it was painting, sculpting, drawing, or writing.

Commonwealth Propper Opens PA Showroom

56th Annual Viennese Opera Ball

The Viennese Opera Ball was an international affair yet again. Participants flew in from all over the country as well as locations ranging from the more expected European countries (like England, Austria, and Germany), to Argentina. Leading up to the ball there were events at the Austrian Consulate, drink gatherings at the Pierre Hotel's 2E Lounge and UES watering hole Haven, and practice sessions at the Waldorf Astoria. The evening was capped off by a spectacular performance of ballet (dancers delivered to the ballroom floor in a horse drawn carriage) and opera, with some of the cadet escorts getting in on the act as ''admiring fans'' of the primadonna. After the Tanz Bar the debs, escorts, and junior committee jetted down to the after-after party at a Greenwich Village apartment. Notable Debutantes and Escorts included Eiseley Tauginas, Hermione Sharp, Frederick Havemeyer, Stephanie Nass, Klaus Pecnik, Dani Wandersee, Carlisle Williams, Pierce Cravens, Katherine White, and Miguel Angel Ferreyra. Proceeds from the evening supported Lauren Bush's charity the FEED Foundation.

50th Annual Quadrille Ball

After several years of renovations, the Plaza is up and running again, and the Quadrille has retured to its previous home. It seems only fitting that this would coincide with the 50th Anniversary of the Quadrille Ball, thrown by the Germanistic Society of America. The event drew alumni of the ball from many different years and countries across the globe. The Debs, Escorts, and guests danced the night away, including the traditional (and quite spirited) midnight quadrille. Following the ball all of the guests were invited to the Kuka Club afterparty, followed by a slightly less official after-after party. It is amazing how after all of this revelry the Debs and Escorts still manage to show up to a brunch at the Liederkranz Club the following day...

"Glass Platform" by Marina Berio

In her curatorial debut Mary Daly Pattee has a smashing success with Outside In at the la viola bank gallery.

Showing 6 artists, Daphne Arthur, Marina Berio, Diane Carr, Mira O'Brien, Leighton Pierce, and Christopher Saunders; the standout pieces were glass platform by Mira O'Brien a mixed media installation of images of a leafless canopied blue sky covered in glass that looked as though it had been trampled by the stilettos of fashion weeks models (if they were a bit heavier). Christopher Saunders' entire series of oil paintings were amazing in their ability to simultaneously express a flat one-dimensionality with the expansiveness of unending atmospheric space while playing with perspective.

Additionally, The video installation by Leighton Pierce downstairs was comprised of three simultaneously running projections of what appeared to be the same bench and its interactions with a mysterious woman set in the woods. The video was dizzyingly out of focus and frenetic in it's movements but in whole it drew you into the piece and the abstract beauty of the colors of nature rather than being distracting.

Casual and soft, these slouchy loungey clothes are perfect for a sunny day in any locale, not just Lamu – a small island in the Indian Ocean off the Kenyan coast which inspired the Spring 2010 collection. The prints of flowers and butterflies scattered throughout were fun and girly without being overbearing. Ostrich feathers glammed up the runway a bit making appearances with metallic detailing as skirts and a dress. I loved the color palate of pale blues, lavenders, and a punch of turquoise all complimenting a buttery cream base. The super soft tissue-weight jerseys are not unexpected from a clothier who always has the finest fabric selections. The pieces adorned with metallic beads brought in some sparkle in an earthy organic way – although occasionally a bit heavy-handed. The palliate skirt is bound to grab everyone’s attention as it walk down the street. My favorite piece was a silver metallic dress that is ethereal and gauzy in contrast to some of the chunkier metallic beading work. Welcome back from vacation Adam and thanks for bringing New York this breath of fresh air.

Poleci - Spring 2010

Drastic improvements from last season at Poleci. From construction to aesthetics this season was many steps in the right direction. The color palate was a little bleak - washed out purples, deep river blues, and dull camo greens. There were some interesting textures created by layering sheer fabrics and gathering. The two standout pieces involved a fun blue sequin fabric which was a sparkling relief amidst the drab matte silks that permeated the collection. The shoes were as clunky as the color choices. There are a lot of interesting and wearable pieces but as a whole there is still some room for improvement at Poleci.

Christian Siriano - Spring 2010

This kid really needs to give up on these hats – oversized even for the Ascot opening day scene from My Fair Lady… Beyond that the clothes were stylish, well tailored, and elegant. Warm silvers and rosy beiges paraded up and down the runway. Ranging from snug and sleek dresses and suits to billowy and soft blouses and skirts, everything seemed to take a minimalist and monochromatic tone. A detailing of blue piping finally accenting the sea of beige hinted at the color splash to come. Then finally, midway through the show, an abstract print of a variegated blue and grey appeared. The print is bold and interesting but can be somewhat aggressive as an 80’s style propelled ruffle or – pushing it even further - a skin tight jumpsuit. I pause. Was Mystique just on the runway? The deep aqua chiffon that grounds the print is calm and serene. Suddenly the palette warmed up with a red top standing out from the rest and we got hotter golds and a red print cocktail dress with petal pleats - apparently Christian is watching reality TV? Super aggressive ball gowns in reds and rose shut down the show, although my favorite was the blue evening gown which he showed before the color shift. Very typical of Siriano’s reputation as a showman to end by hitting you over the head with a bunch of big statement pieces; maybe if I wore one of those ridiculous hats I would be a bit more protected. Nonetheless this was generally a very solid collection you will definitely see around Manhattan this spring and the shoes were to die for!

ADAM Loves Dogs

What is better than a room full of puppies, sliders, and Bloody Marys on a Sunday afternoon. The setting of the ADAM store only topped it off. This event to benefit the Humane Society of New York included on site adoption of both dogs and amazing fashion. Adam Lippes' incredible design aesthetic is obvious at his runway shows, but the in store event allowed guests to touch the pieces and feel his attention to the beautiful tactile aspect of his garments. 10% of proceeds went to the humane society.

Amanda Dolan “Heart Attack” Opening at Ward-Nasse Gallery

It is always great to see an artist progress, and Amanda has made leaps and bounds since her show last year at the Ward-Nasse Gallery. I got a chance to talk to Amanda about the series, and she explained her sensitivity to the negative market conditions with her usual upbeat candor. There were a variety of sizes allowing the price-points, which in turn make the more accessible for consumers. And consumers were buzzing for it. One of my favorite pieces ‘Ice Queen’ had already sold by the time I arrived, and another one was purchased as I was walking through the space and taking it all in. I think that the frenetic mélange of the previous series has been streamlined and you can see a clear influence of Basquiat and Warhol with a bit of Barbie and Cindy Lauper for fun. There was continuity to the series both between the works and referencing back to other pieces from the “Call Me Crazy” series. The pieces in “Heart Attack” carry much more gravitas, as the title of the show would suggest. It is amazing at times how Amanda can use glitter and hot pink paint to create deeply moving and reflective art. The cupcakes, a perennial favorite, were supplied by Sugar Sweet Sunshine – probably the best cupcake bakery in New York City. I will definitely be taking a trip back to the gallery to look at them again, and recommend anyone else in need of a pick-me-up look into Amanda Dolan’s work as well.

Erin and her Cello performed during a VIP reception and Kim Cameron and Side FX performed during the main brunch. Prince Rudolf Knaise-Melikoff met up with new friends Rachel Kirwin, Asha Talwar, and Eamon Wood whom he met at the Frick Ball days before. Axel Ditlev-Simonsen and host Sofia Vassilakis, both from European shipping families, introduced many guests to the group of Young Shipping Professionals in attendance. Recent debutantes making their way across the social scene after coming out at the Crillon Ball, International Debutante Ball, and Viennese Opera Ball (among others) included Anne Moody, Elizabeth Brown, and Alex Kolasinski. Admiral Craig Bone, father of host Ian Bone, added some top brass to the military-focused charity event. Guests also enjoyed Nat Sherman cigars – some taking their gift bags early and enjoying a mid-brunch smoking break with a view from one of the NYAC balconies. The brunch ended with the attendees donning sunglasses from their gift bags to brave the all-too-bright 3:00 sunlight after several hours of Champagne and Bloody Marys.

Ronnie Kroell Album Launch at Paris Commune

Ronnie Kroell hosted a gathering of friends including Tyson Beckford at West Village staple Paris Commune recently to celebrate the launch of his new album “Chemical Addictions”. Guests were treated to specialty “Taste of Her Sin”-tinis in the uber-chic, subterranean, Rouge Wine Bar. In addition DJ Drew G playing tracks from the album and his own remixes of Ronnie's debut singles, "Miserable Attraction" and "Taste of Her Sin," guests got a live performance by Ronnie and fellow Make Me A Supermodel contestants Perry Ullmann and Casey Skinner. The guys had formed a mock boy band in Times Square during the filming of the show; putting out an alleged record 50 hits in under 4 minutes. The performance of one such hit was followed by a reenactment of Ronnie deciding to go solo. The lighthearted atmosphere was a great compliment to the fun dance tracks on the album.

The 52nd Annual Bal Polonaise

The 52nd Annual Bal Polonaise benefiting the Polish Assistance was held in the ballroom of the Plaza Hotel again this year. The dancing ticket for this event is usually a favorite of the younger crowd coming off of either the Viennese Opera Ball or the Quadrille Ball. However, this year was significantly scaled back – one of the first major events to be noticeably affected by the current economic environment. Given the lower attendance and shorter hours, the event was still in many ways a great success. Those who did attend found themselves treated to an open bar (last year the dancing ticket featured a cash bar) and a dance floor with room to show off some moves. Elizabeth Brown and I even had the whole floor toward the end of the evening for an exhibition of our Viennese Waltz. Many debutantes from the International Debutante Ball re-convened for this evening with Elizabeth Brown, Anne Moody, Patricia Poekel, Abigail Tufts (all 2008) and Breanna Sage (2006) in attendance. The evening continued onwards as many of us piled into an impromptu limo ride over to PJ Clarkes and then on to Nikki Beach Midtown for the after-parties. An upcoming Champagne Brunch at the New York Athletic Club was the talk of the evening, with many guests planning to attend. Look for coverage of that event coming soon.

Luca Luca AW 09

Simple classic and well tailored, these clothes are traditional Luca Luca. Hosting the show in the Plaza Hotel’s Palm Court, with an audience who looked like regulars, only seemed too fitting. The models looked as though they could have sat down at any of the tables and taken tea. A beautiful and restrained use of fur throughout the collection, I particularly loved the fox vest-dress. Colors were generally dark and deeply saturated – two of my favorite color choices were the deep teal and eggplant. Additionally, there was a nice subtle use of print with the iridescent multicolor fabric. Accessories were distractingly large and off-putting. Elegant, well made, and wearable without being breathtaking; these clothes will definitely sell - which is what you need in a recession... I guess.

Guests were greeted by several of the best pieces at this in-store presentation. Two long Grecian column dresses with asymmetrical seaming were interesting but unfinished. The mannequin in the window had on the most stunning piece - a blue metallic fringe skirt with a black Grace Jones inspired jersey hoodie. The burnt gold overdress of tulle rosettes was intriguing but bulky. From there in the pieces became more un-wearable and unfinished. Some of the metal accents embroidered into the dresses weighed down the lightweight ground fabrics. This was most evident when the models would change pedestals. I found myself wondering if the presentation format was beneficial in not showing the hindrance of movement or if it was a mistake to allow guests to see the unfinished hems, buckling seams, and general sloppy finishing up close. Three standout pieces included a textured metallic silk skirt in silver, the same fabric top in gold, and a fur smock that was precariously held in the back by a large safety pin. As for accessories, a gorgeous indigo necklace looked almost like coral forming, or some moss from a magical forest. However, the other accessory pieces looked like last a bad grab bag from last season. The shoes were interesting although clearly uncomfortable. In all the show was almost as unbalanced as the hastily made asymmetrical garments.

ADAM by Adam Lippes AW 09

Finally some color. ADAM is currently the best show I have seen this season, and with the Blondes not showing all bets are that this will be my top pick for AW09. Amazing range from sequins, to bright colors, to amazing cherry tree embroidery, to fanstastic coats – this show had everything you will need to keep you happy and warm next fall. The detailing on one of the coats almost looked like oysters laid out on the collar – not that you would need any help from aphrodisiacs if you were wearing anything from this collection. All of the color choices were very warm, including one amazing orange fur coat, a welcome break from the somber collections walking all over Bryant Park this week. It seems it is Adam Lippes’ time to shine. This grouping of great wearable pieces will warm your heart and your body.

Academy of Art University AW 09

The first pieces out were over worked and understyled. Talk about depressing clothes for the depression. Not much to say other than a general disconnect with the clothes. I understand it is a sad time, but why do we all have to look like we were hit by a tornado.

The second designer came out with an overly neutral palate of taupes and khakis - more focused on the textural and playing with linear patterns. Somewhat African inspired including one pseudo-zebra coat which was interestingly constructed. The see through fabric gave a sense of lightness while still appearing warm.

Hobo hats and loose garments. Whoever decided grunge was back needs to be shot. I am all for the age of recycling and whatnot, but I hope the green movement in fashion sticks to fabrics not style. These garments will be dressing a new generation of bag ladies. Though it was somewhat redeemed at the end with some interesting prints such as the faces print included here.

The group began to get a bit better with the menswear looks. Oversized outerwear but great sweaters underneath the knit coats. I love the pastel pink palate for winter - particularly how it plays off the soft greys. Pants are a miss generally in that their fit has yet to be perfected. It is almost as if the models are walking in their long-johns. Finally there is something for a long walk down the beach in the Hamptons in February.

The women's sweater dresses are a ray of hope after all the darkness the other womenswear designers before. Extremely interesting patters with great abstract prints over stipes. I personally love the stripes gloves - a sleek and chic accessory. Definitely clothes to keep the starving artist beauties warm next winter.

Saving the best for last apparently, the final collection was full of interesting prints. Very Japanese, these clothes look like nihonga paintings on wool. Incredibly simple, wearable, and beautiful. These pieces are for those well-heeled ladies who are still lunching and want a soft look to cushion the economic freefall.
